Choosing how to spend my time

March 30, 2009

I’m proud to claim that as of last week I am free from a personal addiction that has robbed me of numerous hours… Yoville on Facebook! My addiction began innocently just a few months ago as I was exploring the countless options on my Facebook homepage. I’ve come to love the community found in my new Facebook home as I have the opportunity to catch up with friends old and new as they give me a little glimpse into their day. We share about our families, our daily lives and even engage in the occasional pillow fight. So who would have thought that such a heinous trap would be lying in wait in the midst of all the fun?

For those of you who have steered clear of the Facebook phenomenon, let me tell you a little about the land of Yoville. Yoville is a virtual world where you can interact with people as you earn bright shiny YoCoins for participating in work, games and other activities. While striving to earn money and badges, you soon find that the virtual world is demanding time from your real world schedule. By the time you realize what has happened, it’s too late…you’re hooked!

I hope by now you realize that I say all of this very ‘tongue in cheek’ as I have purposely made this molehill into a mountain. But the point is still the same… whether its work, play, computers, addictions or just laziness, it is so easy to mess up the list of priorities in our lives. Can you relate to this? What things do you prioritize above those which are more important? Whatever it is that we do with our time each day, we need to do it for the sole purpose of bringing glory to God. So when I took a look at my day, I realized that I was doing this activity for me, not for Him. Perhaps you need to do a quick evaluation of how you are spending your time too. Allowing God to direct your day not only helps you get more accomplished but also produces more eternal fruit.

Be blessed!

“Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives.” Titus 3:14
